Class Learning Goals
Students learn the basics of the Latin language, including basic vocabulary and translating the Latin sentence.
This first Latin class of the eight-semester Carmenta Online Latin Course covers the basics of the language. This includes all four verb conjugations in the present, imperfect, and future indicative tenses; noun cases and the first three noun declensions; the irregular verbs Sum and Possum; and the demonstratives Hic, Ille, and Iste.
The next session of Latin 1A runs from Sept. 2018 to Jan. 2019. It is an accredited live online class held through Skype at pre-scheduled times. The Carmenta Latin 1A class operates just like an in-person class, with teacher and students hearing and seeing each other in real time. Students enroll in either the morning or the evening section. The Morning Section is held M/W/F 11 AM - noon Eastern Time. The Evening Section is held M/W/F 8-9 PM Eastern Time. The class is open to all students ages 13 and up, both teenagers and adults. This Latin 1A class is the first class of the 8-semester accredited Carmenta Latin Course. All students are required to begin the course in Latin 1A and proceed through the course in order — students are not allowed to begin in Latin 1B or above. Students who would like to begin at a higher level have the option of taking the accredited Carmenta Course through one of our One-on-One Latin Instructors.
Each class session is 1 hour long if class enrollment is 5 students or more. If 3 or 4 students are enrolled in a class, then class sessions are 45 minutes long; if there are 1 or 2 students, then they are 30 minutes long.
Students who enroll in Latin 1A need to purchase the two required textbooks: Wheelock's Latin and Workbook for Wheelock's Latin. Click Here to purchase textbooks. Students are expected to have both textbooks by the first day of class.

Class Ratings & Reviews

"This class helps me achieve my educational goals because it is a fast-paced course, so it teaches me how to have multiple activities going on at once, because at the same time I have my classes at my high school. This also helps me with my language class at school since I gain speaking and writing skills here...My favorite part about the class is the friendly environment. Magistra Natasha creates a very helpful, learning environment where everyone can learn and is not afraid to ask questions. Overall, I am very pleased with my first experience learning Latin here, and a huge part of that was because of Magistra Natasha."

"Natasha brings a lot of experience to the online classroom. She has a variety of exercises for the class to do in order to ensure we are getting sufficient practice...She is also really nice and always on time. I hope she is my teacher next semester."

"My command of Latin grammar is much improved. I credit my teacher Natasha with that. First, she had us review English grammar so we knew verbs, adjectives, etc. and could progress to learning how they worked in Latin. She taught us a set of steps for translating that I really wish I’d known in high school. She made sure we had a firm command of the concepts from the chapter before moving on. Natasha also made the class fun with interesting anecdotes and the translation of stories in Latin. The Wheelock’s text for the course is concise and cumulative so you continually build upon skills from previous chapters. The repetition found in the homework exercises from Wheelock really helps the concepts become second-nature. Finally, even though we are thousands of miles apart (with our teacher in IN and students from NY, CA, TN, and WA) the Skype platform makes the interactions with both my teacher and the class feel like we are in an actual classroom together."

"My instructor, Natasha, has been great. She has an enthusiasm for Latin and teaching that is nice to see. Being an instructor myself, I appreciate the time she puts into the class to make it easier and fun to learn. She is patient and willing to explain things, no matter how often it is needed by students, and she has a great sense of humor. This is my first online class of this nature (via Skype) and I was uncertain how it would flow. Natasha smoothly manages the class and I am still able to feel a connection to her and my fellow students. She is willing to answer questions and gets back to students in a timely manner. I thoroughly enjoy my time learning with her during each class."

"My Latin has come back to me; I am studying it completely this time. I am grasping English Grammar much better. Dr. P. is incredibly patient, yet moves the class along and does not hold us back. He has been very helpful when answering questions. His work with us on English-to-Latin sentences has been incredible because it is harder that Latin to English. He gives us reading passages that are just a touch above our level to push us!
Each class period feels like a successful use of time! Dr. P. has been incredibly patient with us, yet helped to push us deeper into the language. After each class, I leave feeling that we have had a successful hour studying and practicing the language. Even though we are only beginners, we are truly grasping the language already and laying a wonderful foundation for future studies.
Dr. P. has high expectations but understands that we are only just beginning our journey. He is very well educated and loves to discuss all aspects of the language, the history of the language, the culture, and anything else that comes up in relation to words or passages we study. Furthermore he ties Latin in with modern languages, which most of us have studied. Finally, his own depth and understanding of the language is incredible."
